An overview of how I built a website for $5/month with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, MySQL, DigitalOcean, Git, PhpStorm, Chart.js, and Bootstrap.

Building Android apps is fun, but for fun I often create websites. Before I was an Android Engineer I was a Web Developer, managing Ecommerce websites, WordPress websites and managing web apps on many different platforms, including Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, Linode, HP, Rackspace and DigitalOcean. It can be a lot of work, but it's also fun.

This video is not a tutorial but rather a brief overview of how I created this website. I started with a Bootstrap template that included the HTML, CSS and JavaScript I needed, then modified it and added PHP and MySQL for backend tasks. I deploy it using Git and DigitalOcean from PhpStorm. When I push master it gets deployed in seconds to production on DigitalOcean.

I register domains with Google Domains, but there are many registrars. Pick one. Google "register domain name" if you're curious as to what's out there. Probably thousands of them. But you'll want "Privacy" and it should cost only about $12/year.

Let's Encrypt provides free SSL/TLS certificates for you website. Don't ever buy an SSL, they're just as good as the free one. I honestly don't even know why you would buy one. They're free.

Again, not a tutorial but just an fast overview of how I did it. Get $100 to spend for two months when you click the link above.

NOTE: DigitalOcean is not a sponsor, and I am affiliated with them in no way, shape or form. I simply like their products and think they're priced appropriately, and for that reason have been using them for years. However, there are many platforms: GCP, AWS, Linode, etc. Just pick one. Any Virtual Machine (VM) will work. Just Google it if you're curious, you might find something less powerful for even cheaper. It's up to you!
