To model the bulk properties of a turbulent fluid flow, we often expand the velocity field into an average and a fluctuating component, substitute into the Navier-Stokes equations, and then average the equations in time. This video describes how to derive the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations, which are widely used for turbulence modeling in engineering applications.
