This was the first of two games during the 1984 high school football season between the then Pacific League rivals; Los Angeles City Section and California state powerhouses: The Banning High School Pilots and the Carson High School Colts. Prior to this game, the Colts last faced the Pilots in the 1983 LA City Section Championship game which ended with a 30-29 score and the Pilots winning their ninth overall 4-A City Championship title. Pilots Quarterback Jamelle Holieway ended the 1984 football season as the 4-A Division player of the year and the City's 4-A MVP.
