In the 2023 Division 4 State Championship Game, the Harper Woods Pioneers captured their first ever state championship in school history. Despite leading 27-7 in the third quarter, they had to fend off a furious comeback by the Sailors of Grand Rapids South Christian, with the game coming all the way down to the final play.

With the score 33-27 Harper Woods, :03 seconds remaining, and South Christian with the ball on the Pioneer 3-yard line, the Harper Woods defense stood tall, knocking away a throw to the end zone, and clinching their first title in school history.

The game was broadcast on Bally Sports Detroit, called by Evan Stockton (play-by-play), former University of Michigan wide receiver Grant Perry (analyst), and Kara Lyles (reporter).
