Did somebody say “Whales”… Juneau, Alaska is where you find whales and that is where I have found a new whale watching tour, one that is very unique. What makes this tour different from all the rest is you not only see whales, but you visit a lighthouse, yes visit not just look at it from the boat.

You will leave the port of Juneau on a shuttle bus for a 20 minute ride to Auke Bay where you will board a luxury tour boat designed specifically for whale watching.

Once at the grounds many times you will experience the whales diving seeing them “tail”. If you are lucky as we were on this trip you will even see one of these magnificent creatures explode from the depths and “breach” the surface like a ballistic missile. At times you may see a group of whales break the surface mouth wide open swallowing their prey “bubble net feeding” or you may even spot a pod orcas.

Next you speed off to Shelter Island the home of the Shelter Island Lighthouse. After a gentle climb and a short walk you emerge from the forest entering a small meadow and the site of the lighthouse.

You have plenty of time and opportunities to capture a wonderful photograph of this iconic lighthouse. You will even be allowed to enter the lighthouse and explore a small portion of it.

Upon returning to the boat you circle the island for another view of the lighthouse before heading north enjoying the scenery along the way and shortly after arrive at a small bay and a dock.

Boarding the shuttle bus you make the journey back towards Juneau with a short stop at the Brotherhood Bridge where you marvel at the Mendenhall Glacier in the background. Then after a short drive you are back in Juneau where you have plenty of time to explore the town.
