In this video, we analyze what is likely to happen once AGI (human-level AI) arrives. AGI will be able to replace humans in all cognitive tasks, given time. We set aside existential risk questions, and focus on how society will need to adapt, assuming that AGI development goes as planned. We identify three phases of change: increasing automation and job disruption, economic transformation, and transformation of purpose. We are currently in the first phase, job disruption.

The second phase will involve economic transformation, presumably an expansion of the social safety net as jobs get automated. We draw examples with the Great Depression, South Korea, and the world's response to COVID. Countries seem well prepared to financially respond as needed, and it's likely that universal basic income will be enacted in many places. As for what individuals can do during this process, the video recommends being politically active and not worrying about the long run.

The third phase involves humans figuring out what they will do to satisfy their need to have purpose. The lower two levels of Maslow's hierarchy of needs (those which currently require money) will be met already, and people will be free to spend more time satisfying the upper levels. The social contract between government and citizens will change, because citizens will no longer be required to put in labor in return for safety and benefits. Money might become a medium of exchange primarily between governments and companies. The video ends on a hopeful note with some advice on how to look for those other non-monetary benefits from a job when one has basic needs supported by a safety net.
