The lost WOA hone vid.... there is a crapton of misinformation about these Scotch hones on the intertubes, it's really hard to get a good clear picture about what these are, and are not. FWIW - these are not slate. They are not pumice. They are not similar to Dragon's Tongue or Yellow Lake stones either. They are not super high grit equivalents of anything. The type of WOA you see in this vid was NOT the first type of stone sold by the TOS Hone Works. Originally, TOS and WOA were used to describe the spotted stone we call TOS today. These black slabs came into the picture later on. When it did show up it was only ever called WOA. What they are - these are a type of indurated mudstone - not quite shale, not that far along in the process of diagenesis. Legend has it that the mud deposits that formed these stones were 'baked by an igneous intrusion - in the ground, from below. So they have some substance. But they are not very rugged. Particle sizes are all over the place, mineral make up other than the typical clay particulate includes Alox, FeOx, and a small percentage of silica too.
