On April 5th 1943 79 B-17 Flying fortresses set off upon a raid. They were targeting a factory in Antwerp that the Germans were using for repairing damaged aircraft. It was a clear day and soon they encountered heavy resistance. Whether the resistance caused the formation to break up or it was some other issue, the raid did not go to plan, instead hitting the civilian population. It was a disaster that caused a formal complaint to be made by the Belgians to the US government.
