As we embark on what will be an unprecedented year, and the biggest in NSW greyhound racing history, we must first reflect on the standout moment of the previous 12 months, and, Our Top Moment of 2021 – and – welp – it goes west … to ‘The People’s Dog’ Tommy Shelby !

The ever-popular West Australian greyhound pulled off a successful raid on Wentworth Park to win the Ladbrokes Golden Easter Egg in race record time – but the win wasn’t without drama. On the day the series was to begin, a deluge had drenched Sydney, forcing almost all race meetings across all codes to be postponed. The entire series was pushed back a week but that week’s delay meant that if Tommy stayed for the Egg, he would miss out on his hometown Perth Cup. What to do? Stay in Sydney and persevere with an Egg campaign, or head home for a local G1?

Thankfully for us, Tommy stayed – and the rest is literally now history! He won in a race record 29.27 and surpassed the $1 million prize money mark the old-fashioned way – what a dog!
