Nara is famous for the 1,200 or so wild deer that roam in the vicinity of Nara Park. It's also one of Japan's ancient capitals and Todai-ji Temple with it's massive Buddha is the biggest wooden building in the world. I didn't plan to be there at 8 am for morning prayers but I'm glad I experienced this! Absolutely unforgettable. Cafe Croco with its $3 breakfast special and friendly senior citizen customers is fantastic. Next time I go back to Nara, I'll stay for a few days, but it makes a great and easy day trip from Kyoto.
