Tom soon after makes a deal with the devil, agreeing to become a usurer in exchange for the treasure. His business thrives during a time of financial speculation. Yet as Tom's wealth grows, he becomes obsessively religious, fearing the afterlife. He engages in unethical practices and swindles people until he crosses a poor land speculator, leading to his eventual encounter with the devil. The devil claims Tom, and he vanishes from the town. All his wealth turns to ashes, and his house burns down. Tom's fate becomes a legend in the area, known as "The Devil and Tom Walker," serving as a warning about greed and making deals with the devil. The story cautions us about the destructive consequences of greed and reveals that wealth obtained through unethical means is ultimately empty and can lead to one's downfall.

Washington Irving (1783-1859) was an American author, essayist, and biographer who is best known for his short story collection The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., which includes such works as The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (   • The Legend of Sleepy Hollow - Washing...  ) and Rip Van Winkle (   • Rip Van Winkle - Washington Irving - ...  ).
