The CAGED System was something I learned later in my guitar career and after my music degree. At first the idea of it sounded wrong because in music theory we are taught that there are only 3 inversions for a standard triad. It wasn’t until I understood more of the nature of the guitar that I realized there is something good and beneficial about this system. This then led me to apply what I already knew about 3 note per string scales. The 3NPS system also has downsides but I believe it is essential to be able to play scales fluently. The CAGED system is good for arpeggios, the 3 note per string system is good for scales, and then the other system of understanding note relationships and functions fills in the gaps for both. For me, my guitar playing ability has really started to settle in after going through all 3 of these ideas which has taken several hours of practice but I don't believe there is an easy way around any of this instrument. It's always going to take lots and lots of work to be able to navigate it well but thats actually very appealing to me. Kind of like trying to solve 1 big lifelong puzzle; creatively and in my own way.
