(27 Sep 1956) Preparations for the royal visit were carried out with great zest, for the people of this island city were determined to offer a worthy welcome. At Government House, the Governor, Sir Evelyn Baring, waited with his wife for the moment when he'd offer Mombasa's official welcome. On the great day itself, the scene at Port Reitz Airport marked the climax of anticipation. The Princess was received by the Governor and Lady Baring. The very smart Guard of Honour inspected by the Princess was mounted by the 7th Battalion, the King's African Rifles. Later at the Diamond Jubilee Hall, Princess Margaret attended a special reception, offered by over a thousand women, from all communities. With the Governor and his wife, the Princess enjoyed brief leisure moments, between the engagements of her full programme.
