Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek (1887-1975) was an enlightened, charismatic Christian leader of Modern China and a bulwark against both communism and fascism. His glamorous wife, Soong Mei-Ling (1897-2003), spoke fluent English and was educated at the prestigious Wellesley College. Chiang was instrumental in defeating the Axis Power in World War II, especially in the Pacific Theater. Republic of China was one of the founding members of the United Nations and one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council. He was abandoned by his allies during the Chinese Civil War 4 years later and spent the rest of his life governing Taiwan, where he contributed in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Toward the end of his life, he was betrayed once more as the Republic of China (ROC) was not only kicked out of the Security Council, but banished from the UN altogether and replaced by communists. This is a tribute to him and what could've been.
