This song, written by Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager, and first recorded by Rod Stewart in 1982 for the soundtrack to the film Night Shift. But in 1985, under the Warner Bros label on Dionne Warwick's 'Night Shift' album. Dionne, Elton John, Gladys Knight, and Stevie Wonder covered it as a charity single for AIDS research and prevention which went on to become a major number one hit in 1986 in the United States.

According to various sources, this song won the Grammy Awards in the categories of Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and Best Song of the Year. The song 'That's What Friends Are For' was also successful in raising more than $3 million which would later be given to AIDS prevention and research charities at that time.
