This week saw the first tentative signs of sardines in Mounts Bay and were fished by a few boats from the local fleet including the Lyonesse, Pelagic Marksman and Mayflower.
Sardines are caught in Cornwall using a variety of methods using ring nets.

The main season for sardine fishing in Cornwall is August to January, but they can be caught outside of this period. Sardines are typically caught in shoals, and fishermen use sonar to locate them.
Once a shoal of sardines is located, the nets are set around them and then closed to catch the fish.
Sardines are a valuable fishery in Cornwall, and they provide a significant source of income for licensed local fishermen. Sardines are typically caught at depths of 10-100 meters.
Sardines are a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial for heart health.
They are also MSC Certified as a sustainable fish, and the fishery is closely managed to ensure that stocks are not overfished.
