The latest exhibit at the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, "Extra! Extra! Eyes of the World on Texas," open from February 26, 2024, reminds us of moments in history when the nation’s spotlight shone on our state as major events unfolded through the media for a worldwide audience.

The exhibit is now on display at the Lorenzo de Zavala State Archives and Library Building in the Capitol Complex in downtown Austin and online at www.tsl.texas.gov/extraextra.

"Extra! Extra! Eyes of the World on Texas" focuses on key episodes from the past century that resonated beyond the state’s borders. Such events were often terrible and even catastrophic, but there were also historic accomplishments with far-reaching impact that changed lives forever. News broadcasts, images, and publications have become part of the fabric of the narrative reconstructing the past for current generations and enhance the documentation of this history that is preserved in the archive.

Out of the disasters and acts of violence came some outcomes that demonstrated the common humanity others felt for Texans in their time of need. Government responses aimed at mitigating future tragedies were important results, as well. Through artifacts and archival records, photographs and publications curated from the State Archives’ collections, "Extra! Extra!" presents documentation about significant events captured in the news.

Beyond the headlines were telegrams about aid for Galvestonians affected by the 1900 hurricane and letters from schoolchildren donating quarters for a memorial after the New London school explosion. Reports detail the radar detection system developed after a series of tornadoes tore through Waco and San Angelo on the same day in 1953. Houston played a key role in putting the first man on the moon, and the gusher at Spindletop became the cornerstone of the oil and gas industry in Texas.

The Lorenzo de Zavala State Archives and Library Building in downtown Austin is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and the second Saturday of each month, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Exhibits are free and open to the public.
