Salt Spring Island, in coastal British Columbia, is a place of true majesty. The temperate forests respire water, cooling and humidifying the air, which lowers the pressure drawing in additional moisture. The continental biotic pump to an ancient ecosystem. The rain is heavy in the winter and spring but shifts to a long dry season stretching through summer, into fall. Capturing the seasonal rains when they are bountiful is essential to life here; animals like the beaver thrive by creating water retention landscapes - recharging the aquifers and enriching the surrounding ecology. We are doing this by using Holzer style water retention, ponds and terraces to balance the seasonal moisture throughout the year.
