Susan Artup, a Blue Mountains Civil Marriage Celebrant, demonstrates the sand ceremony, in which sand of at least two colours are poured into an empty, commemorative glass container. The colours are poured in alternately by the couple to symbolise the blending of their lives. If the couple has children, more colours can be poured to symbolise the creation of a new family. The sands are all mixed up in a pattern, never to be unraveled, and the container is kept as a decorative souvenir of the wedding example of future unity.
