Londonderry Air est un hymne irlandais. C'est une mélodie populaire au sein de la diaspora irlandaise et est également utilisé par l'Irlande du Nord comme hymne national avant certaines compétitions sportives (comme aux Jeux du Commonwealth). Les paroles les plus célèbres pour cette mélodie sont Danny Boy. Mireille Mathieu l'a repris sous le titre L'enfant de l'Irlande sur un texte de Jean-Marie Moreau dans l'album Mireille ...

イギリスの法律家で作詞家のフレデリック・エドワード・ウェザリ（1848～1929）は、1910年に『ダニー・ボーイ』という詞を書きました。
　これにつける適当なメロディがないまま寝かせておいたところ、２年後の1912年、アメリカに住んでいた義妹が『ロンドンデリー・エア』の楽譜を送ってきました。

　それを見たウェザリは、『ダニー・ボーイ』がこの曲によく合うことに気がつき、元の詞を若干手直しして、このメロディに当てはめました。『ダニー・ボーイ』は1913年にニューヨークで発行され、まもなく世界に広まりました。

　ウェザリの詞は、恋の歌に思われるのですが、母子の別れの歌とする説が強いようです。

　２番の最初の行の「all the flowers are dying」のところを、「all the world is dying」や「all the roses are dying」としているヴァリアントもあります。「all the world is dying」だと、出征したわが子を思う母の思いというイメージが強くなります。
　『ダニー・ボーイ』が発行された年は、第一次世界大戦勃発の前年で、世界中が戦争の予感におびえていたときでした。
