Hershel island. The last episode of our Arctic adventure series, 3 weeks in the high Arctic as a family. This journey has been filled with unforgettable moments, and we can’t wait to share our arctic experiences with you!

After traveling to Old Crow by snowmobile, we returned to Fort McPherson, having to turn back instead of navigating through the mountains to reach the Arctic Ocean that way. The decision was tough, but safety always comes first. From Fort McPherson, we continued our 3 week family adventure by snowmobile on the ice road to Aklavik. Beyond Aklavik, the landscape transforms dramatically—there are no more roads or communities, just an endless expanse of ice and whiteness that we share with the incredible Arctic wildlife.

As we ventured deeper into the Arctic, we encountered some challenges along the way. We faced issues with our tent, overflow water challenges, and even some toboggans breaking under the harsh conditions. But despite these hurdles, our determination never wavered. We finally made it to the Arctic Ocean and the stunning Herschel Island.

However, upon arrival, a surprising setback awaited us: the public cabin was completely filled with snow. Was it a polar bear or just the wind that breached this Arctic haven? While we may never know for sure, we certainly have our suspicions, and we’ll share those with you!

With enough time to shovel out the cabin, we’ll take you on an exclusive tour of Herschel Island. This remote paradise is rich with history and beauty, and we can’t wait for you to explore it with us. We’ll also delve into the fascinating SDC oil rig resting off the shores of Herschel Island. Although it hasn’t operated since 2006, its intriguing history and striking presence make it a compelling sight against the desolate Arctic landscape. This landmark serves as a remarkable reminder that we are truly on the ocean ice.
Last but not least, we will also look for polar bears.

Throughout our 3 weeks in the high Arctic, we’ve learned so much about resilience, family bonding, and the breathtaking beauty of the Arctic environment. We’ve faced challenges and embraced every moment, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
