NSO Vrij
Door muziek voel je je vrij! Verlies jezelf in de muziek en vergeet alle dagelijkse zorgen. Tijdens deze tournee van het Nederlands Studenten Orkest (NSO) stond vrijheid centraal. Maar zonder beperking geen vrijheid: De Amerikaanse slaven dansten de cakewalk die we horen in Debussy, Trevor Grahl creëerde voor het orkest een volledig nieuw werk. Ravel verschafte Wittgenstein de vrijheid alsnog piano te spelen, nadat deze zijn rechterarm had verloren in de Eerste Wereldoorlog en Bartók werd bevrijd van enorme zorgen tijdens het componeren van zijn succesvolle Concert voor orkest.

Samen met dirigent Bas Wiegers en de bekende jonge pianist Arthur Jussen stortten de 94 studenten - een maand vrij van hun studie - zich op dit prachtige project. In tien dagen werd het uitdagende programma ingestudeerd, gevolgd door een concertreeks in de 11 mooiste zalen van Nederland. Na het laatste concert in Het Concertgebouw vertrok het orkest naar het bruisende Madrid om nog drie concerten te geven.

Op maandag 15 februari 2016 speelde het NSO in De Doelen, Rotterdam. Daar werd deze opname gemaakt.

NSO for freedom
Freedom does not exist without restrictions. This year’s program of the Dutch National Student Orchestra (NSO) was born out of restrictions and the letting go of these very restrictions. In Débussy we hear the characteristics of the cakewalk, danced by black American slaves. Trevor Grahl created a brand new piece, experimenting with the confines of symphonic music. Ravel enabled Paul Wittgenstein - a soldier who lost his right arm during WWI - to resume his passion and play the piano with solely his left hand. And Bartók, finally, was relieved of financial worries and illness while composing Concerto for Orchestra.

The NSO had united 94 talented students from all over the country to present under the direction of conductor Bas Wiegers a grand tour along all major Dutch concert halls. After the tour in the Netherlands, the orchestra travelled to Madrid to play its final concerts. The well-known pianist Arthur Jussen, one of the famous Jussen brothers, was the soloist in Ravel.

On Monday 15 February 2016 the NSO performed its challenging programme in De Doelen, Rotterdam.
