This 1991 documentary presents a lively and informative look at the neighborhood once known as Pittsburgh’s Black Harlem. “Wylie” explores the Hill’s time as a settlement area for African Americans leaving the south during the Great Migration to its glory days as the neighborhood of record for the best of Black Pittsburgh. The program presents a deep dive into one of the city’s most storied and iconic regions, one that flourished despite the racism of the time. Highlights include rare archival footage and interviews with the men and women whose talents, families and businesses made the Hill District the place to be. Restored from the WQED Archives, the program is part of the WQED’s Pittsburgh History Series.
