Salt Cell Cleaning and Salt Pool Care:
   • Salt Water Pool Care & Salt Cell Clea...

Here is an updated version of my "Repairing a Discharge Leak" -- I used a 2" X 12" GF Nipple high heat PVC pipe (rated at a melting temperature of 160 degrees) and a tri-pod for my camera. The first video came out good but was very hard to film while holding the camera in one hand.

Parts used in the video:

Grainger GF Piping Nipple 2 X 12" threaded Connection, PVC schedule 80, color grey (for pump discharge connection). I cut it in half.

2 INCH PVC Fitting Extender WWP429-2010 or Pool PVC Pipe Plumbing Extender 2" Repair Fitting 0303-20 (What I used over the elbow fitting)

2 INCH PVC Coupling (what I used to connect the Fitting Extender to the Nipple Pipe)

Plasto-Joint Stick ABS PVC Pipe Compound Thread Sealant 1.25oz 11775 (What I used on the threaded part of the Nipple pipe going into the top of the pump).

Pool-Tite PVC plastic pipe cement - Blue Glue "HOT" | 1/2 Pint | 2356S (for gluing the fittings together)

2 INCH male Adapter (for threading into top of pump - shown here but not used)
2 INCH Elbow (shown but not used)

Pool-Tite Glue Instructions:
Shake can well. Use a primer to clean the pipe fittings (priming step is not needed for non-pressure pipes less than 4" in diameter. Apply liberal coat of cement to pipe depth of the socket, leave no uncoated surface. Apply a thin coat inside if the fitting, avoid puddling, Apply a second coat to the pipe. Assemble parts Quickly. Cement must be fluid. If cement surface has dried recoat both parts. Push pipe firmly into fitting giving it a ¼ turning motion. Hold pipe and fitting together for 30 seconds to avoid it popping out. Glue can get old so if it is gel like don't use it.

You can use the Purple primer or the clear one to prep the pipes. The Purple primer has a very strong dye in it so if you drip it won't come off, so the clear one is less messy.

If you are inexperienced in doing pool plumbing you can use a heavy glue that will give you more time to attach the fittings and pipes. I also find that the heavy glue is less likely to leak verses the Pool Tite Blue glue if you don't apply it correctly,

Weldon 12130 1/2 Pint 704 PVC Cement, Gray or if you can get it;
Weldon Pool Heavy 746 PVC Cement, Gray.

So if you pool pump runs dry for any reason the pump discharge pipe usually will melt causing a leak and sometimes a leak big enough to stop the pump from priming. The repair is fairly easy once you get the right parts and fitting lined up for the job. Give the pipes and fittings a little twist as you connect them together with the Pool-Tite glue. Also try to see the best way to put the last piece in before you start gluing everything together or you might have trouble finishing the plumbing. You can always cut again and redo it.

I like to wait 24 hours before I restart the pump. Overkill but better safe than sorry.

I hope having the tri-pod helped with this version:
