This song was written in 1826 by José Bonifácio de Andrada, the "Patriarch of Independence" of Brazil. It uses music from the "Himno del Riego", composed in 1816 by José Melchor Gomis and Evaristo San Miguel as a kind of liberal anthem (and briefly adopted as a national anthem during the Liberal government in the 1820s). Bonifácio, who at the time was exiled in France, composed the song as an exaltation to Brazilians who fought for Brazil's independence, but also as a criticism of the authoritarianism of Emperor Dom Pedro I. "Hunchbacks" was how liberals called monarchs authoritarians in the early 19th century.
