Following last years initial foray back into the gala market with its Spring Steam Up, 2022 saw the full return of the Spring Steam Gala at the Severn Valley Railway. The event would see the return of local services running alongside full line services, with locals between Kidderminster and Arley/Highley, and Bridgnorth and Hampton Loade making a welcome addition to the event.

The loco lineup saw three guests alongside the residents. Star of the show was the recently returned from overhaul LNER A4 No 4498 'Sir Nigel Gresley' appearing in LNER Black for the first time in preservation. Also in wartime black was SR S15 Class No 506 from the Mid Hants Railway. Final guest was a repeat of 2021 with new build GWR Saint Class No 2999 'Lady of Legend' from Didcot Railway Centre. A third wartime black loco in the form of SR Terrier No 2678 'Knowle' had originally been booked to appear, but due to unexpected work being needed, was unable to attend. One loco making its first passenger runs on the railway was Austerity No 71516 'Welsh Guardsman' despite the railway being its base for around two year. This was the first Austerity to operate a passenger service since the early days of the railway, so was a welcome sight during the weekend.

The weather over the event was dry throughout, with a mix of overcast and windy conditions, with sun thrown in for good measure for a good chunk of the time.
