The Cortamonte is a feast celebrated during Carnival. Dancing takes place round two or three trees which are planted the day before or two days before the main feast day. In the Cortamonte they dance in a ring, the couples dance and throw axes at the tree until it falls down and they continue the dance. The new padrinos (godparents/ sponsors of the annual festival) for the following year's Cortamonte are the couple whose axe finally fells the tree and the next year they will plant the tree in the same place and organise the feast, which means decorating the tree with presents and surprises, making food for everyone and paying for the band of musicians.
