Hello,
Today, in the 23rd episode of our Eastern Black Sea series, we leave Rize, enter Artvin and pass to Arhavi district.
Arhavi is one of the 2 districts of Artvin on the Black Sea coast.
It is on the road connecting the Black Sea cities of Batumi and Artvin.
Arhavi is 48 km from Batumi, 81 km from Artvin and Rize, 163 km from Trabzon and 480 km from Samsun.
The district has a total population of 20 thousand with its central and rural settlements.
Located in front of the high mountain range, on a flat area, on the Black Sea coast, the town is a complete Black Sea City in terms of nature and life culture.
There are tea plantations and hazelnut orchards in many parts of the district.
Arhavi also has a Laz Culture from the past.
It is possible to feel the Laz culture in many places, from daily conversation to food and lifestyle.
It is estimated that Arhavi, known as Arkhavis in ancient times, was a village between the city of Athena, that is, between Pazar district and Gönye.
The name Arkhavis was adapted to the Laz language during the Ottoman period and used as Arhava, that is, the Old Place.
It is estimated that the people living in Arhavi are the oldest indigenous people living in this region since Antiquity.
Arhavi, like many other Black Sea cities, is a district rich in natural beauties and historical heritage.
Ortacalar Kemer Bridges, also known as the Double Bridge, are among the most well-known historical structures of the district. The bridges, which are estimated to have been built in the 18th century, are 2.5 km from Ortacalar village and 10 km from the town center.
The two bridges with one eye are architecturally similar to each other.
One of the most known and visited natural values of the district is the Mençuna Waterfall.
Located in Kamilet Valley, the waterfall consists of two parts, the upper and lower parts.
In the upper part, the water flows from 80 meters.
In the lower part, it flows from 10 meters and divides into two branches.
The foams formed as a result of the running water hitting the rocks below and the resulting image are the most effective features of Mençuna.
To reach the waterfall, after the Double Bridges, it is necessary to take the Küçük Village road for approximately 20 minutes by car and then walk for 30 minutes in the forest on foot.
For those who want to stay in this natural wonder environment for a long time, there are accommodation facilities close to the waterfall.
That's it from Arhavi.
See you in Borcka in the next episode, bye for now.
