Rishi Sunak’s time as UK prime minister is at an end with his Conservative Party roundly beaten in the 2024 General Election.
Here, we look back on some memorable moments that defined his time in office.
Sunak took over the job of prime minister after the chaotically brief reign of Liz Truss, becoming the country’s first British Asian PM.
With opinion polls against him, many believed his tenure was a car crash waiting to happen, and it didn’t help that he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt in one of his social media videos.
He tried to solve the problem of ‘small boats’ with a bigger boat - the Bibby Stockholm, before a plan to deport illegal migrants to Rwanda was hatched.
Mr Sunak repeatedly tried to brush off questions about his massive personal wealth.
Some claimed he was out of touch with the struggles of ordinary people, particularly as the cost of living crisis began to bite.
He did keep his promise to halve inflation and continued to support Ukraine’s war against Russia, but also watered down the country’s net zero commitments and faced some of the biggest public sector strikes in living memory.
Few believed he could turn things around with the announcement of a general election on a wet day in May.
But the scale of the defeat, fairly or not, will define Rishi Sunak’s legacy.
