Dear Residents of Belding Town,

As the sun dips below the horizon, casting its last golden rays over our cherished Knights Memorial Bridge, I feel an overwhelming urge to reach out to you, my fellow retirees and esteemed citizens. We find ourselves at a pivotal moment in our community’s history—one where the echoes of our past call us to awaken from the slumber of indifference that has gripped us for far too long. It is time for us to reclaim the honor and dignity that have been overshadowed by generations of apathy.

In the spirit of enlightenment championed by Thomas Paine, let us remember his powerful words: “The mind once enlightened cannot again become dark.” We gather not to beseech some distant deity or higher power; instead, we gather to ignite the flames of our own dormant spirits. The sacrifices made during the dragon and unicorn wars resonate through our history, and it is these memories that must guide us toward a more vibrant and engaged future.

Each one of us holds within our hearts a token of our past—perhaps a broken clock that symbolizes lost time, or a faded photograph that captures moments we once cherished. It is time to cast aside these tokens of apathy into the flowing waters below, allowing them to sink into oblivion as we rise anew from their depths. Our legacy is not merely a relic of yesteryears; as Paine wisely articulated, “What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly.” We must not allow our rich history and shared experiences to fade into obscurity.

I implore each of you to share your stories of valor and loss, weaving together a tapestry of collective memory that can reignite the passion that once defined us as a community. Let us conjure vivid images of our shared experiences, reminding ourselves that we are not mere shadows of our past but rather architects of our future. Together, we can envision meaningful projects that will restore dignity and pride to our beloved community—a mural that depicts the rich tapestry of our history, a cleanup initiative for the bridge that honors those who came before us, or mentorship programs aimed at guiding younger generations who will carry forward the torch of our legacy.

As darkness envelops us tonight, let us light candles along the edge of the bridge. These flickering flames will symbolize hope and determination—a beacon for all who come after us. Let them shine brightly against the night sky, illuminating our path as we move forward together. United in purpose, we can transform this moment into a movement—a resurgence of community spirit that inspires action rather than apathy.

Let us awaken from this slumber and take decisive action. The time for change is now! We owe it to ourselves, to each other, and to those who will inherit this town after us. Together, let’s rise from complacency and thrive in unity.

A Retired Knight of Belding Town
