SpaceFields is thrilled to unveil and successfully hot-fire India's First AeroSpike Rocket Engine. The static-test campaign for the 168mm rocket motor was conducted at our Propulsion test facility at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Challakere in Chitradurga district.

Upon ignition, initially chuffing was observed. However soon after steady-state combustion was reached. HTPB-based composite propellant was used for the static-fire test. Max recorded pressure of 11bar and Peak thrust of 2000N was achieved, with total impulse of 54485.9 Ns generated. We have chosen Titanium grade 5 as the main metal to build the engine. And our GFRP-based ablative thermal insulation to protect the spike from the hot gases, the patent for which was recently granted.

Aerospike nozzles are designed to be altitude compensating i.e. optimum efficiency across a range of pressure regimes: a unique capability that allows for a huge increase in efficiency with respect to currently used bell nozzles. In other words, reduction in staging, reduced amount of fuel to bring the same mass to orbit.
