Singapore: Every actor appreciates a good round of applause.

And in a fitting send-off, MediaCorp actor Huang Wenyong received heart-felt applause from his family of 30 years - the staff of MediaCorp.

Before the heavens opened up, the road around Caldecott Hill was ringed by people who knew Huang in one way or another.

"He was lined up behind me in the canteen, and asked me repeatedly if I wanted the last egg on sale.

"Problem is, I don't speak a word of Mandarin! We had a good laugh when he realised the problem" remembered one journalist of Huang who had no airs about his star status.

Canteen operator Lin Xiu-er, also had fond memories of Huang.

"I'm here to take one last look at Wenyong when he passes by. I've known him for over 30 years, so I'm very sad ... and I hope that he will have a good journey" she said.

With a photo of Huang smiling down on the crowd, the hearse wound its way along Caldecott Hill.

But the solemn funeral music from the hearse was quickly drowned by loud applause from the hundreds who braved the afternoon heat and humidity.

Many continued to applaud as they walked a last journey behind the hearse, while others stood by quietly, wiping away tears.

"I've known Wenyong from day one when he was in Singapore" shared Loong Chow Jin of Facilities Management.

"I got the role to house him in the HDB flat in Ang Mo Kio. He is a gentleman, very professional in his job. He's not demanding, and he's very nice overall" said Loong who described the actor as "a good colleague".

Sharing similar sentiments was Quek Tee Chye of Enterprise-wide Risk Management.

"I'm here to send my good friend off. We worked quite closely in the past... I'm very sad. He was very friendly, a very approachable guy".

Those who didn't know Huang personally, still felt a connection to the actor who starred in many Channel 8 TV shows.

"I am here today because Wenyong to me, is a very long memory. I have watched his shows since a very young age, from The Awakening till now" said Peggy Tan of CPI.

Liana Tan, who also grew up watching Huang on TV added, "I like him, you know, very much, in the shows".

"It was shocking news for us, because initially we thought he was just having some sickness... We were in tears you know, when we watched Star Search. We also feel sad for the family".

Huang's family had decided to route the hearse along Caldecott Hill as it headed to Bright Hill crematorium.

Partly hidden by a sun-shield in one of the cars that inched along behind the hearse, Huang's widow peeped out tentatively, waving a thank-you to the crowd.

The actor who died on Saturday was clearly a fond, familiar face.

At his funeral service held at Ubi, it was also apparent just how many lives were touched by the late MediaCorp actor, as scores of fans joined mourners in the sea of sadness.
