Teenager Betty Elliott takes it upon herself to manage the business and personal affairs of her father, Doc Elliott, convinced that he should marry Julie Harper, the widowed mother of her boyfriend, Chris. While Doc has mentored Chris in caring for the town's sick animals, financial struggles prevent Julie from sending Chris to finish school or pursue medical training. Complicating matters, Chris's wealthy grandfather offers to fund Chris’s future—but only if Julie gives up custody of her son. As if that weren't enough, the family lawyer begins courting Julie, threatening Betty's carefully laid plans for a happy union.
