Old Virginia Brick Company is no longer in business, but at one time the company operated a mine at Slaty Gap, on Peavine Mountain, in the George Washington National Forest near Glasgow, in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. A few structures and several open pit quarries are still visible along and near the gated forest service road at the end of Hercules Road, just north of the James River at Snowden. Low quality slate was mined from this area and used as an aggregate in blocks and bricks.

I decided to explore the area on foot and mountain bike. Awesome views as well as interesting manmade features are your reward for making the steep climb up the road. From the upper portions of the mine, there are outstanding views of Rocky Row, Terrapin Mountain, Apple Orchard Mountain, Thunder Ridge, Hickory Stand, and the James RIver Face Wilderness Area. In the lower areas, one can explore Rocky Row Run Creek and a number of concrete structure ruins.

Thanks for watching!
