This premiere ballade by Chopin dates back to 1831 during Chopin's eight months stay in Vienna. The work was completed in 1835 after Chopin left for Paris. Chopin dedicated this work to Baron Nathaniel von Stockhausen the hanoverian ambassador of France. After Chopin had visited Schumann in Leipzig, Schumann had said in a letter this piece was his favorite work by the composer heralding it as a magnificent work "though not the closest to Chopin's genius." Chopin was pleased and in response said "it too is my dearest work."
