A guard comes to call Goryanchikov he is brought out to the prison yard. The Commander offers a reluctant apology; he ensures his apology is accepted before telling Goryanchikov that he is a free man. He orders the blacksmith to strike off his irons. At the same moment the prisoners free the eagle "the eagle is Tsar", it doesn't look back as it flies away to golden freedom. Aljeja, distraught, says goodbye to Goryanchikov and the prisoners are marched back to work.
