The original song is "Aria", the second song from J.S. Bach Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major, BWV1068.
Arranged into songs for violin and piano by 19th century violinist August Wilhelmj. Since it can be played only with the G line, which is the lowest string of the violin, it has come to be called "Air on the G string" and can be said to be one of the most beloved songs of Bach.
