The town of Solvang in California was founded in 1911 by three Danish immigrants who purchased 10 000 acres of land and settled there. And this is the most Danish place you can find in the US.

I decided to explore Solvang from a Scandinavian perspective, and see how Danish the most Danish town in America really is.

Solvang has a lot of things to see and do. The Hans Christian Andersen Museum (and park), a copy of Rundetårn, a Little Mermaid statue, the Elverhøj Museum, a Viking Museum, an Amber Museum, and much more. But it's also filled with more American activities - like wine tasting tours.

There's plenty of Danish bakeries and restaurants in town, and you can find everything from æbleskiver to smørrebrød, and of course traditional Danish pastries. Which are not Danish at all. In fact, they are called Viennese bread in Denmark. Aside from the name, I also examine other differences between Danish cuisine in Denmark and in Solvang. Oh, and I just might bring up Danish beer as well while I'm at it.

But there's more. I also discuss the history of the enmity between Sweden and Denmark, the similarities and dissimilarities between Solvang and Denmark in general, and I explore the history of why Solvang started to build houses in the style of 19th century Danish farmhouses.

In the end, do I think that Solvang is a good example of Denmark in California? Or is it just American exploitation at work? I guess you'll have to watch the video to find out.
