In this tutorial I intended to show how head drawing in charcoal is developed from block-in to refining details using minimal approach: which is to say I minimized rendering, especially for the beard and let go of the clothing to finish this piece asap. I could have spent 20 more mins on that beard, but I thought fluid broad strokes create better rhythmic quality. In the block-in stage I directly drew the shapes as I saw them and forgo of the structural scaffolding lines to study the planes. Its because I Believe planar study of the head and the structure of human skull is a must-have knowledge which should always be studied separately, yet not all portrait drawing is about planes and structure. After all drawing is mark making on a 2-dimentional surface, and this can be achieved by direct drawing of shapes backed up with a profound understanding of the underlying structure.
