A CALL FOR PEACE

We are gathered here today neither to protest against, nor to sit in judgment on Russia. We feel, instead, a great sense of solidarity with the Russian nation. Throughout history, Indonesia has never been in conflict with Russia, we have always maintained friendly relations.

We admire and appreciate the great works of Russian literature, its music, films and arts. We are happy that the Russian people reciprocate our affection through their appreciation of the Indonesian arts and the land itself.

Nonetheless, we are deeply perturbed by what we have seen in recent weeks, even if only from a great distance. We have seen war engulf Ukraine, a country with which we have never had any quarrel.

Our expression of concern has nothing to do with politics. We object only to the misery and suffering caused by the war. We see thousands of people living in fear and terror, thousands of people killed by bombs and bullets. We see thousands of people, children and the elderly, forced to seek safety in makeshift shelters or to flee for foreign lands, as the shells of the artillery land around them. We see thousands of people, in hunger and in need of medical care, uncertain if they will survive the terrors they face.

With all this, we see the end of civility and respect between nations, the end of hope for a better future.

We remember a time when the Russian nation supported freedom and peace across the world. In their different ways, Indonesia and Russia have both taken a stand against imperialism, against the arbitrary exertion of power by militarily powerful states against weaker ones. And now, we stand here today to continue to express our condemnation and rejection of the exertion of this type of power. We call on the Russian nation to remember, to continue to stand against injustice. We call on the Russian nation to recognize and respond to the feelings of people everywhere around the world.

We call out to everyone who is prepared to listen: Bring an end to this war in Ukraine!

Призыв к прекращению войны

Мы пришли и собрались здесь не для того, чтобы протестовать. Мы не будем судить. Мы приехали с чувством дружбы к русскому народу, который в истории никогда не имел с индонезийским народом споров: да, между нами только добрые и хорошие отношения.

Мы наслаждаемся и даже любим литературные произведения, музыку, фильмы и другие виды искусства, созданные русским народом. И мы рады, что россияне тоже любят индонезийское искусство и природу.

Но мы обеспокоены. Мы видим и смотрим, хотя и издалека, как война, охватившая Украину – страну и народ, который никогда враждебно не относился к нам, а мы – к нему.

Наше беспокойство не носит политического характера. Наша озабоченность вызвана широко распространенными страданиями, вызванными войной. Тысячи людей испугались и потеряли имущество; тысячи людей были убиты пулями и бомбами. Тысячи людей, в том числе дети и старики, вынуждены были сутками жить в убежищах или уходить далеко в чужие края, спасаясь от артиллерийских обстрелов. Тысячи людей голодают, нуждаются в медицинской помощи и уже не знают, как выжить.

В то же время разбито жизненное пространство, разбито межнациональное братство, разбита надежда - надежда на мирное будущее.

Много лет назад Россия поддерживала различные мировые движения за мир. Мы вместе, разными способами, Индонезия и Россия, отвергали произвол империализма, что также означает произвол более сильных вооруженных государств по отношению к более слабым. Мы и сейчас отвергаем, даже осуждаем такой произвол. Так что надеемся, напомним, что народ, живущий на русской земле, будет следовать этому духу и заботе - заботе почти всех в мире.

Мы заявляем и призываем всех: остановите войну в Украине!
