The craftsman intricately hand-carving various sculptures from solid Odisha sandstone. An outline is drawn on cut-to-size stone and hammers and chisels of various sizes are used to shape the solid stone into the final figure.
Odisha sandstone is obtained from sedimentary rocks and is mostly composed of sand-sized grains making it softer than other stones hence easier to carve but also easier to break. The craftsman has to be very careful and precise while working on this stone.
