Lyrics:
Well, it was Stonewall, Texas
August 27th of ‘08, where Lyndon Baines Johnson arrived
He attended some college
Was a high school teacher, entered politics and found his insatiable drive
In ‘34, he wed his sweetheart, Lady Bird, had Lynda and Luci, all ‘LBJ’s
Lyndon Baines Johnson, Texas-born-and-bred
The call of Washington sent him on his way
In ‘37, a U.S. Rep
In ‘49, a Senator, held the leading seats till ‘61
Johnson tried to beat John Kennedy for the 1960 presidential nomination
But Kennedy won, Johnson became the VP, but wanted more responsibility
Lyndon Baines Johnson
Texas-born-and-bred
Held legislative reigns of power in DC
Chorus
President Lyndon Johnson, number 36, he was
A shrewd, ambitious man doing the best at what he does
Well, in late ‘63, in Dallas, JFK was gunned down,
LBJ assumed the role of president
Began the War on Poverty, expanded Civil Rights, pressed NASA,
And more soldiers to South Vietnam were sent
He faced protests over the Vietnam stalemate, so in ‘68, chose not to run
Lyndon Baines Johnson
Texas-born-and-bred
He knew a second term, he wouldn’t have won
Johnson left DC and returned to Stonewall, wrote two books and oversaw his library
Had a series of heart attacks, and died January 22, 1973
His legacy was blemished by the Vietnam quagmire, his Great Society plan made his party strong
Lyndon Baines Johnson
Texas-born-and-bred
He felt he did more right than what he did wrong
