GROVER WASHINGTON, JR. WAS THE REAL DEAL, NOT MERELY A "SMOOTH JAZZ" SAXOPHONIST.

GROVER WASHINGTON, JR. TRIBUTE - WINELIGHT SONG - DR. SAX ROMANCE pays tribute to one of his saxophone heroes and inspirations, the great GROVER WASHINGTON, JR. in his classic song "WINELIGHT."

GROVER WASHINGTON, JR. (1943-1999) was one of the seminal saxophone masters of the latter half of the twentieth century, achieving mainstream success and charting with "Just the Two of Us" with vocalist Bill Withers, for which he won a Grammy.

Grover was really the FIRST tenor sax player that I listened to when I first started (1973). And he remains one of my sax heroes to this day.

He was adept at soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones and preceded the "Smooth Jazz" movement, playing soul-Jazz and funk-Jazz instead. He could also play "straight-ahead" Jazz with the best of them, and I think we would have been treated to more recordings in this area had he not tragically died of a heart attack literally after walking off the set of a live CBS television show.

Dr. Sax Romance (a/k/a Jeffrey "Saxophone Tall" Newton) saw Grover in concert many times.

The tune WINELIGHT is from Grover's 1980 album of the same name, and one of Jeff's favorites of Grover's (among many). Further tributes to follow.

Thank you, GROVER WASHINGTON, JR., for a half century of inspiration! I hope it's worthy.
