One million soldiers were killed or wounded or remained missing. On 1 July 1916 alone, 19,000 British soldiers fell, plus 36,000 were wounded. Ultimately without result. Military historian Basil Liddell Hart: "Nothing more than stupid, mass mutual slaughter".
