Why is Dussehra Celebrated ?
Celebrating Dussehra has different story in different part of India. The eastern and southern states celebrate Dussehra as the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura. First day of Navratri is marked as the begin of the war which continues for nine days.
Northern and western states of India celebrate Dussehra as Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana.

How is Dussehra Celebrated ?
The first day of Navratri is dedicated to the worship of Maa Shailaputri and followed by the worship of Maa Chandraghanta, Maa Skandmata and the other avatars of Goddess Durga on different days of Navrati.
Idols of Goddess Durga with Kalash is setup up in pandals, temples and even at home. On the 10th day these are immersed in rivers, oceans or other water bodies.
In some places people organize dance and drama skits that are based on the story of Ramayana, popularly known as Ram Lia.
On the tenth day i.e. on the day of Dussehra, huge Ravana idols are set on fire which signifies the victory of Lord Rama.
At a spiritual level, this festival signifies the end of negativity and evil within us and marks a fresh new beginning.
