China’s first large, fully solar-powered drone made its successful maiden flight on September 3, 2022, in the northwestern province of Shaanxi. The Qingming 50 landed smoothly after spending 26 minutes in the air. Developed by Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), the Qingming or “morning star” drone is designed to fly at altitudes of more than 20km (12 miles) above Earth’s surface. AVIC said the drone will be able to stay aloft for an extended time and keep flying even during periods of overnight darkness.
