In this Conversation About, psychologists Claudia Longhi and Flávia Amoroso discuss the Polyvagal Theory and its applicability in psychotherapy. In the fifth episode, they discuss when a patient reports events in his or her life, but does not bring feelings to the facts.

Even if this patient is unable to bring his or her feelings into the therapeutic process and remains in therapy, something leads him or her to this process.

Traumatized people do not have words to explain, they do not have a repertoire of words, which is why it may seem like they are speaking from a 'shallow' place, which may be the only safe place for them.

'Shallow' patients are as if there are protective parts that do not allow access to feelings and the inner world. Even if this person is apparently functional on the outside. In the same way that they block out pain, they block out love. It is an apparently safe place.

It is only basic if I have lived, received and felt. If the basics are missing, they become survivors. They survive, but do not live.
