Conservative Party of Canada leader Pierre Poilievre continued to demand an “independent and open public investigation” into allegations of foreign election interference in the House of Commons foyer in Ottawa on Tuesday.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday committed to new steps his government will take to combat foreign interference, including additional independent investigations and further steps toward establishing a foreign agents registry. But none of the steps in Trudeau’s multipronged approach included a public inquiry, which opposition leaders had signalled earlier in the day was the only method of investigation they would support.

“He’ll pick another Liberal, establishment insider — a real Ottawa insider with some gray hair,” Poilievre said. “But we all know it’ll be someone tied to him, tied to the Liberals.”

When asked if Poilievre had ordered any reviews of his own Conservative party nominations in light of the revelations, Poilievre said that he encouraged CSIS to tell leaders of all political parties if there were any attempts by foreign actors to interfere or infiltrate nominations and election campaigns. He promised he would “root it out” if any such information was brought to his attention.
