Join seven members of the San Diego Audubon Society on Earth Day weekend as we venture to the scenic San Joaquin Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary in Irvine. This hidden gem, nestled in the heart of bustling Orange County, spans over 300 acres of coastal freshwater wetlands. Home to a diverse array of avian species, the sanctuary boasts 12 miles of winding trails, offering a serene retreat for both wildlife enthusiasts and casual walkers alike. On this excursion, we observed an impressive total of 42 bird species, each contributing to the vibrant diversity of life within this remarkable sanctuary.
The observed species include Canada Goose, Snowy Egret, Great Blue Heron, Western Grebe, Clark's Grebe, Pied-billed Grebe, Double-crested Cormorant, American White Pelican, Black-necked Stilt, American Avocet, Killdeer, Caspian Tern, Forster's Tern, Mallard, Gadwall, Northern Shoveler, Redhead, Bufflehead, Ruddy Duck, American Coot, Black Skimmer, Osprey, Cooper's Hawk, Mourning Dove, Anna's Hummingbird, Rufous Hummingbird, Allen's Hummingbird, Rufous/Allen's Hummingbird, Downy Woodpecker, Black Phoebe, American Crow, Bushtit, Tree Swallow, Barn Swallow, Cliff Swallow, Marsh Wren, House Finch, Song Sparrow, Spotted Towhee, Great-tailed Grackle, Common Yellowthroat, and Green Heron.
