Today, we bring you the story of Yurika, a Japanese wife, and her American husband, Griffey, who relocated to the Yoshida area in Shimonoseki. They moved from Kyoto into a vacant 30-year-old house and started their new life there.

Yurika, originally from Saitama, met Griffey in Australia after serving in the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers in the Maldives. They got married and, three years ago, found a house that perfectly matched Yurika’s vision of their future. They were immediately captivated by the vacant property. Now, the couple is working towards a self-sufficient lifestyle, enjoying pesticide-free vegetables grown in their garden, and have installed solar panels on their property.

After relocating, Griffey began working part-time at a local agricultural company, helping them integrate with the local community. The welcoming residents have embraced the couple, and they are gradually becoming part of the community. They also plan to renovate their home to offer spaces for activities like yoga classes.

Their relocation journey has come with both rewards and challenges. The 30-year-old house required renovations, and sorting through the belongings left by the previous owners took considerable time. However, they enjoy the creative process of transforming the house into their own space.
